URBAN/TRIBE is a dynamic artistic collective founded by Mathew James Talaugon, an enrolled member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Rooted in the principles of tribal life—including inclusion, community, and collaboration—URBAN/TRIBE is a platform for innovative artists to create work that is both deeply personal and socially resonant.Blending movement, storytelling, and improvisation, URBAN/TRIBE crafts visceral performances that explore cultural, societal, and political narratives. Through its bold and immersive approach, the company seeks to expand the boundaries of contemporary performance, forging meaningful connections between artists and audiences alike.
Mathew James Talaugon
Founder & Artistic Director
Mathew James Talaugon is a queer and Native artist whose work explores contemporary culture through movement, storytelling, and bold physicality. As the founder and Artistic Director of URBAN/TRIBE, Mathew has presented thought-provoking performances across Los Angeles and New York, including at Bryant Park and the Jewish Community Center: Manhattan. With an MFA from NYU Tisch and a career spanning performances with renowned choreographers, Mathew also serves as a faculty member at Peridance Center, shaping the next generation of contemporary dancers.
